Travel is the antidote to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness (Mark Twain). Everyone should have the opportunity to broaden their perspectives by experiencing another culture.


That’s why we work with local families who want to host someone who speaks English. We screen both our host families and our Travelers to ensure everyone is as safe as possible. Then we help with introductions and arrangements. (Don’t worry, you get to make the final decision on your host family!)

How We Started

Rome Abroad was founded in 2015 by Sara after she took a leap and became an au pair in Pisa, Italy. The family she lived with was looking for a native English speaker to help their daughter—and Sara was eager for an adventure.

Italy’s rich history, vibrant art, delicious food, and warm people captured her heart. But more than that, living abroad pushed her out of her comfort zone in ways she never imagined.When it was time to leave, she realized the experience had changed her forever. She came home:

Wanting others to have the same life-changing opportunity, Sara launched Rome Abroad to help young people live abroad affordably, without the barriers that so often stand in the way.

Since then, Rome Abroad has helped over 350 people experience life abroad. What started in Italy has expanded to include Spain, France, Australia, and China.

Today, Stef carries the torch—continuing the mission with the same heart and vision. As someone equally passionate about cultural exchange and meaningful travel, she’s committed to making Rome Abroad even more impactful for the next generation of au pairs.
